Given the needs and the importance of independence to the effectiveness of SAIs, IDI has initiated a capacity development programme to contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance independence of SAIs globally. The objective of the programme is “greater SAI independence”.

The programme has three components:

- Advocate SAI independence

- Guidance on SAI independence

- SAI level support for 3 selected SAIs

The Exposure Draft of the Guidance  document "Towards Greater Independence - A Guidance for Supreme Audit Institutions" (1.47 MB)  is now available here for comments from stakeholders.
This guidance is a key element of the programme. It aims to build on and bring together the various international declarations and the work done by many stakeholders with a practical focus. It is meant to give practical help and support to SAIs wishing to enhance their independence in line with the principles of the Lima and Mexico Declarations. It has been written as a global resource, with the different SAI models in mind.

We are also looking at ways of providing as many practical experiences, strategies and lessons learned from SAIs in achieving greater SAI Independence.

This is very much work in progress and we would appreciate your feedback and inputs for enhancing this document. All suggestions, questions, comments and disagreements are most welcome.
